Target Audience

These educational activities have been designed for primary care physicians and other health care professionals who treat patients with pain.

Series Overview

This 7-module interactive CME multimedia series is designed to improve primary care physicians’ knowledge and competence in the management of acute and chronic pain, with the ultimate goal of improving clinical practice and providing optimal pain management to their patients.

The content for the educational modules focuses on specific, practical aspects of the assessment and management of acute and chronic pain. Each module consists of a patient case study and an interactive didactic presentation with clinical commentary. Knowledge questions are interspersed throughout the modules.

Pain is one of the most common reasons that patients seek the services of Health Care Professionals (HCPs), yet most medical professionals currently feel inadequate to care for patients with pain. HCPs need updated, state-of-the-art, effective education to assist them in developing the skills necessary to evaluate and manage patients with pain. It is essential that HCPs understand and address the prevailing attitudes toward pain, because the perceptions of both patients and HCPs can present barriers to optimal pain management and resultant improved quality of life.

The “Insights into Pain Management” curriculum is designed to satisfy a previously unmet need by imparting the science of pain management; an understanding of HCPs’ attitudes and beliefs about their patients; the essential elements of clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment; and the art of communication. We hope that teachers and trainers will find this curriculum useful and share it with their students physicians in training.

Learning Objectives

Following participation in this series of activities, participants will be better able to:

  • Translate an understanding of the basic pathophysiology of pain into optimal clinical practice
  • List common, often overlooked, clinical pain syndromes addressing the diagnostic and therapeutic decisions that need to be made
  • Give at least three reasons for treating acute pain syndromes early
  • Enumerate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic choices for acute and chronic pain management, with an understanding of how all approaches may benefit each other
  • Develop a scheme of rational drug selection, titration, and administration, based upon tolerability, safety, and prevention of toxicity
  • Identify the common misconceptions and barriers to achieving pain control using opioids and nonopioids appropriately
  • Name and explain the importance of elements of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to pain, including techniques to improve patient and physician communications
Assessment

To assess your change in knowledge and competence, each module in this series contains a Baseline Assessment Quiz and a Postmodule Quiz. To earn CME credit, you must take the Postmodule Quiz. We encourage you to take both quizzes so that your scores can be compared and displayed for you to see the change and potential improvement. These data will be collected to help us with educational outcomes research. Be assured that your anonymity and your personal information will be protected.
